Hello,
I'm booked to have some treatments at a spa but have been told there are some essentila oils I should avoid becuase I take Methotrexate but no-one seems to be able to tell me which ones!! Has anyone else ever come accross this - I really don't want to have to cancel my lovely relaxing treatments Sad so am trying to find out as much as possible so I can get the therapist to use alternatives.
Thanks.

I have never heard this before, you can still have relaxing treatment, just ask for a preblended ready made up mix, which would be so diluted it wouldn't matter and drink plenty of water afterwards. If you were using neat essential oils in large quantities I can see this maybe, but not at the quantities and oils you are likely to be using. Ask for gentle oils such as rose and lavender etc, avoid stimulating ones such as rosemary. I am an aromatherapist by the way!!!!

Hope you enjoy your treatments!!!!

Interesting- I use products from Lush which contain essential oils- Debbie- are they also likely to be in small quantities if they are in bath / skincare products?

Thankfully I don't like grapefruit in any form!!!

Yes i must not have grape fruit it interfares with stains and other stuff .

I live in the spa and i am on MTX ( they don,t know whats the point of telling they are young girls not doctors )

..I wonder if you used a strong amoma theapy oil ????Would it harm ??? I know my spa don,t use these strong oils as they have there own product .

ITS NEVER done anything too me .Expect i must not lisein to the girls telling me.Its all natual and no ones can be alligic too it . Or what they try and sell you .
you can be allicgic to water ..Most stuff is ok for me as long as its not on the face .Even if they tell you its for roseasa i suffer from .

Just watch the sales talk .I would guess not much will hurt you as i have it done and i have vast skin promlems .Take any thing a young trained girl says with a pinch of salt .As they are not dermigloists .I can do pretty much anything as long as it not on my face .Watch massageing imflamed joints .
Get too know the treatments and then to can tayor them to your self .

Hi Ju,

I, too, have had lots of spa treatments and have been on MTX for some of them.

Like Chrissie says, the girls are not Dr's anyway and will not know much about what interacts with what med.

I looked up MTX and aromatherapy and there wasn't much there. I would just enquire exactly what they're using but as they will be just on the surface skin area it shouldn't be a problem at all.

Have FUN and ENJOY!

Hi
Benzoin as it increases effect of sun on skin doubled with mtx which makes one more sun sensitive, not a highly used oil due to fact can turn skin orange if used and then go in sun lgiht.
small amounts in cream etc fine.

have lovely time enjoy the oils.
ps learnt this from my therpaist training.

my spa uses a clay based cream with all sorts in .And when i went to Bath spa its was like this .

You could ask for baby oil if you are worried .As i suppose as long as they use oil in a massage it would not matter if it was baby oil .
sure my friend uses it some times she can do massage .

i just like getting on those beds if i have money to pay for it and never mind the rest .ha ha

Thank you all for your replies.

I decided to get in touch with my Rheumatology nurse who confirmed there were some oils that I should avoid and has asked me to provide a list of ingredients so that she can pass it on - the people looking into it have also asked for a complete list of my meds too - I have no idea who 'they' are but the Rheum nurse described them as the appropriate department so we'll see what they say!

The spa I'm going to uses Decleor products so it was quite easy to research online and find out which oils they use. I'm hoping that if any 'oils to be avoided' are on my list that as they are in a blended preparation they would only be present in very small quantities and so I won't have to make any changes to my treatments - who'd have thought it eh?!

xx

Oh I will be eager to know Ju, as I use decleor ALL the time! I absolutely LOVE it! I have a few massage oils and face oils actually and have never thought to check up on them.

I am pretty convinced they are being overly cautious but I guess that's only correct.

Do relax and have fun though!

You'll smell gorgeous!

Amanda - Decleor does smell yummy doesn't it - I think it's the neroli oil in it - just the smell relaxs me as it makes me think of the spa! I use it at home too so I hope they are being overly cautious - I love their exfoliator and night balm. :o)

Hi everyone, my sister is an aromatherapist and she said that bergamot should not be used as that causes sun sensitivity anyway whether on MTX or not. But the therapist in the Spa - if properly qualified - should know what oils can or cannot be used. You could try getting in touch with the Bristol Cancer Health Centre as MTX is the same drug used in cancer patients and they do a course there for aromatherapists to treat cancer patients so they will know what oils are safe. I'm sorry I don't know the number but you should be able to find details on Google! Enjoy your spa day! Love Allison x
